The national average for cancer mortality per 100,000 people is 146, versus 180 in Mississippi, making it 23% higher than the average.
CANCER TYPES
Between 2017 and 2021, lung/bronchus cancers were responsible for 8,979 deaths, followed by colorectal cancer 3,157 deaths, female breast cancer 2,319 deaths, and prostate cancer 1,812 deaths.
CANCER BY RACE
African Americans had a 13% higher rate of cancer mortality than Whites
(196 per 100,000 African Americans; 174 per 100,000 Whites)
CANCER BY GEOGRAPHY
The mortality rate of all types of cancers in the Delta Regional Coalition was 17% higher than in the Central Coalition Region.

Cancer Thriving and Surviving (CTS) revolves around warm and supportive workshops specially created for cancer survivors. It provides valuable resources and comforting assistance to help attendees take charge of their health and lead vibrant, fulfilling lives. Participants are encouraged to personalize the workshop experience to their individual needs, with topics including:
- Communicating with family and friends
- Working effectively with healthcare providers
- Dealing with negative emotions
- Healthy eating
- Fear of recurrence
- Changes in body image
- Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance
- Fear of recurrence

Survivorship Care Plan
According to the Centers for Disease Control, A survivorship care plan is a record of your cancer and treatment history, as well as any future checkups or follow-up tests you need. It may also list possible long-term effects of your treatments and ideas for staying healthy.
What is it?
- A service to survivors and their healthcare providers.
- Free, publicly accessible.
- Produces customized survivorship care plans for users after completion of a brief survey.
- Takes healthcare providers 4-5 minutes to complete.
